RFA West Lancs Bdes
680656 L.BDR. S. GRUNDY. R.F.A.
I have little biographical information about Stanley Grundy. We know from CWGC that he was born in 1897 and that his parents were Richard and Annie Grundy, living in Penwortham, Lancashire, but I have been unable to locate the family in the Censuses. From his service number, 680656, it looks as if he enlisted in 1915 and was first posted to “A” Battery of 286 Brigade, but he was at some point promoted to Lance Bombardier and posted to “B” Battery of 78th Brigade. 78Bde came under orders of 17th (Northern) Division. 17th Division was caught up in the German Spring Offensive in March and April 1918 and Stanley was killed in action near Varennes on the Somme on 5 April 1918. He was 21 years old.
