TT/03902 PTE. M. JACKSON. A.S.C. [prev. 680738 GNR. M. JACKSON.  R.F.A.]

Michael Jackson, was born in 1896 in Brotton-in-Cleveland.  His father was also Michael Jackson (b. 1850 in Loftus, or Lofthouse, near Leeds), a miner.  His mother was Jane Elizabeth Brundrett (b. 1861 in Upleatham, near Redcar in North Yorkshire).  It seems Michael snr moved from the coal mines of West Yorkshire to the ironstone mines of North Yorkshire in the late 1880s.  He and Jane were married in 1893, and they had two children, Michael and his sister Elizabeth (b. 1894).  However, Michael snr died in 1898 and Jane moved with her two children to Lostock Hall.  The family relationships are extremely complicated but are explained here.

Michael enlisted, probably in May 1915, as a Gunner in the West Lancashire Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery (service number 680738), but he later transferred to the Army Veterinary Corps (TT/03902).  At the time of his death, he was attached to 4th AVC Reserve Hospital, which was based at Bulford.  He died on 29 October 1918, aged 22, and is buried at St Paul’s Farington.  His cause of death is not known but October-November 1918 were the peak months for the influenza pandemic.
