681722 GNR D. LYNCH.  R.F.A.

Denis Lynch served in the Artillery during the War under his mother’s maiden name.  He was born Denis Lordan in 1885 in Co. Cork, Ireland.  His father was Jeremiah Lordan (b. 1852 in Cork), a school teacher.  His mother was Julia Lynch (b. 1854 in Cork).  Jeremiah and Julia were married in 1875 and they had 8 children.  Their first daughter died, the other children were: Hannah (b. 1882), Kate (b. 1883), then Denis, then Mary (b. 1889), John (b. 1892), Nellie (b. 1894) and Nora (b. 1895).  In 1901, Denis (then 16) was still at school and living with his family in Garranes, Co. Cork.  He is not living with the family in 1911 and I have been unable to trace him under either surname in the Censuses.

The military records say that he enlisted in Liverpool and his service number (681722) suggests he enlisted with a group of men, some of whom served with 286 Brigade.  At some point, however, Denis was transferred to “C” Battery of 82nd Brigade.  82Bde came under orders of 18th (Eastern) Division.  18th Division fought through several phase of the Third Battle of Ypres including the Battle of Pilkem Ridge, the Battle of Langemark and the First and Second Battles of Passchendaele.  Denis was killed in action near Ypres on 6 January 1918.  He was 33 years old.
